Tokyo to Fukuoka: flight or Shinkansen
You are heading to Kyushu and need to choose between a short flight and a long train ride.
Kyushu is spread out, and you want one hotel that keeps the day trips short.
Hakata in Fukuoka is a strong base for a first Kyushu trip. Fukuoka Airport is extremely close to the city centre, and Hakata Station is the terminus of both the Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen lines 1.
This guide covers the day trips, the onward trains and the food stalls.
The airport sits close to the city, so a late or tired arrival is easy 1. From Fukuoka, Hiroshima is about one hour by Shinkansen and Nagasaki about two hours by train 2. Tokyo is about five hours by Shinkansen or two hours by plane 2.
That makes Hakata a rail and air hub rather than only a food city. Our Kyushu first trip with a Fukuoka base guide gives the wider picture.
Dazaifu Tenmangu is the best-known outing. It is a shrine to the scholar and politician Michizane Sugawara, with more than 6,000 plum trees that flower each spring 3. It suits a half day with children or elders.
Nagasaki is about two hours by train, so it suits a long day or an overnight 2. Our Fukuoka, Nagasaki and Kumamoto loop shows how to link the three. For rail links to Kumamoto and Kagoshima, see the Kyushu Shinkansen guide.
Fukuoka is known for yatai, small outdoor food stalls. JNTO recommends trying tonkotsu ramen at a local yatai and dining at a stall in summer 4. Read our Fukuoka yatai and Hakata food guide for the details.
Yatai are small, so check seats and queue times before you set out. If anyone in your group eats halal, read the section below.
Plan ahead. JNTO notes that Muslim-friendly restaurants and prayer spaces cluster in major cities, and that mirin and cooking sake appear in everyday dishes 5. Yatai broths and sauces are hard to verify at a glance.
Only the stall owner can confirm what is in a bowl. We help you prepare questions and a backup meal. See our Muslim-friendly dining planning page.
Our Fukuoka Airport to Hakata guide covers the airport link. If you come from Tokyo, the flight versus Shinkansen guide compares the two ways.
Hakata is not the best base for every Kyushu route. If you plan mainly Beppu and Kagoshima, a second base saves backtracking. See Beppu and Kagoshima for that route.
Our Fukuoka overview places the city in a wider plan. Send us your days and group, and we choose the day trips and Shinkansen legs.
