Flying from Tokyo or Osaka to Okinawa

You want a beach week after the cities, and you wonder how best to get there.

Fly from Tokyo or Osaka to Naha. Okinawa is an island chain with no rail link, and Tokyo to Naha flights run frequently every day 1. That makes it an easy beach add-on after a mainland trip.

This guide covers how to pick the flight, the season, and the bags.

What is the Okinawa add-on?

It is a few beach days at the end of a mainland Japan trip. Most flights to Naha Airport depart from Tokyo or Osaka 1. You finish your city days, fly south, and rest by the sea before heading home.

It fits couples and families who want a slower finish. Our Okinawa versus mainland Japan guide helps you decide whether to add it.

How do you fly there?

Book one domestic flight from Tokyo or Osaka to Naha. Naha also connects to Miyako, Ishigaki, Yonaguni and Kume, if you want a further island 1. A monorail runs from Naha Airport through Naha to Shuri 2.

Our Naha Airport to Okinawa hotels guide covers the first night. If you start from Malaysia, see Okinawa from Malaysia.

What about season and typhoons?

Okinawa has a subtropical climate, with summer from June to October 3. JNTO notes early fall typhoons, after which humidity drops 3. Keep a spare day before your flight home in case of delays.

Winter is about 15 °C, which is cool for a tropical family 3. Read our Okinawa swimming season guide.

How do bags work on the domestic flight?

Domestic flights have their own baggage rules, which can differ from your international ticket. Check the allowance and fees on the airline’s page for your fare, since low-cost carriers charge separately. Our guides on domestic and international allowances and low-cost carrier baggage rules explain how to compare.

Forward large suitcases ahead to the airport or hotel, and carry a small beach bag. If you are leaving by Shinkansen first, bags of 161 to 250 cm total need a reserved seat with an oversized baggage area 4.

When is a different plan better?

If you have under seven days in Japan, keep to one region. Okinawa adds a flight day each way. A hot-spring stay on the mainland may suit you better. See Japan with Okinawa after the mainland for the full plan.

What should Malaysian travellers know?

Okinawa is subtropical, so it will feel closer to home than Hokkaido. Sun protection matters. Check your travel dates against typhoon notes, and book flexible hotel terms.

Our Okinawa overview places the island in a wider plan. Send us your last mainland city and dates, and we plan the flight and baggage.

If you want Okinawa after a Tokyo or Kansai trip, send us your dates and your last mainland city. We plan the flight, the baggage and the first night in Naha.
