Business hotel or apartment-style stay

A longer trip means laundry, suitcases and tired legs, and the room matters more.

For a trip of a week or more, an apartment-style stay gives you space, a kitchen and sometimes a washer. A business hotel gives you a station-side location and a simple room. Pick by how much you need to wash, cook and spread out, not by price alone.

What is the difference at a glance?

Business hotels in Japan are placed close to train stations, and their rooms are smaller and offer fewer amenities than standard hotels 1. Apartment hotels aim at longer stays. One chain listed by JNTO equips its rooms with a kitchen and living and dining spaces, with studio rooms of approximately 40 square metres 2.

Business hotel Apartment-style stay
Room size Compact. Larger, with a living area.
Kitchen Not usually. Included in some units, check the listing.
Laundry Coin laundry or hotel service. Washer in some units, check first.
Location Beside a station. Varies, sometimes a short walk.
Best for Short stops, one night. Four nights or more in one city.

When does a business hotel work better?

A business hotel suits one or two nights, early departures and onward train days. You step out of the station, check in quickly and leave next morning. If the room is small, it matters less because you are out all day.

For couples and solo travellers it can be the simpler choice. Read how big Japanese hotel rooms really are before you book for a family.

When does an apartment-style stay work better?

It works well when you stay four nights or more in one city, travel with children, or want to cook breakfast. A separate living space also helps when someone naps while others stay up.

Ask each property whether the washer is in the unit or shared, and whether the kitchen has the utensils you need. Our guide to hotel laundry and coin laundry covers the options when there is no washer.

How do luggage and moving days change the choice?

A hotel change can eat half a day. If you move every night or two, a compact business hotel is easier because bags go up in a lift and out again. If you stay put, a larger unit is more comfortable.

You can send bags ahead with takkyubin. Yamato Transport can send luggage hotel to hotel if the destination reception works with Yamato, and the bag should arrive at least one day before your stay 3. See luggage storage after checkout for the hours between checkout and your train.

What should you ask before you book?

  1. What is the room size in square metres, and how many guests may stay?
  2. Is there a washer in the unit, and is detergent provided?
  3. Is there a lift, and how far is the nearest station?
  4. Can the reception hold or receive luggage?
  5. Are cleaning fees or extra-person charges added?

If you rent a private apartment rather than a hotel, check the local rules in vacation rental rules in Japan. For a family, one family room or two rooms shows how the quote changes.

Questions travellers ask

Is an apartment-style stay cheaper than a business hotel?

Not always per night, but the total can change once you count meals and laundry. A kitchen lets a family cook simple breakfasts, and a washer cuts the clothes you carry. Compare the full cost, including cleaning fees and extra-person charges, before deciding.

Do business hotel rooms fit a family of four?

Usually not in one room. JNTO describes business hotel rooms as smaller than standard hotels, so families may book two rooms or a family room. Ask for the room size in square metres and the maximum number of guests before you pay.

Can I send my suitcases ahead to the next hotel?

Yes, if the next hotel's reception works with Yamato Transport. Yamato asks that the bag arrives at least one day before your stay. Confirm with both hotels first, and carry a small bag with one night of clothes.
