Business hotel, the compact station hotel

You keep seeing small, cheap hotels near stations and wonder if they suit a family.

A business hotel is a compact, efficient hotel in Japan, usually close to a train station. The rooms are smaller than in a standard hotel and have fewer amenities 1. Tourists use them as much as workers do.

What can you expect?

Expect a small room with a bed, a compact bathroom and the basics. Service is quick and simple, and check-in is often fast. The value is the location: a short walk to the station saves time and effort on a busy day.

How does it matter to a Malaysian traveller?

For short stays and early starts, a business hotel is easy and good value. For families, check the room size and the bed rules. At Toyoko Inn, children of elementary school age and younger stay free when sharing a bed with an adult, one child per bed, and extra beds are not available 2.

A family of four may need two rooms. Compare the total with one family room or two rooms and read Japanese hotel room size reality.

For a night with dinner and tatami, compare it with a ryokan in business hotel versus ryokan: real cost.
