Open-jaw flights

You would rather not walk the same route back to the airport you flew into.

An open-jaw flight is a ticket where you land in one city and fly home from a different one. For Japan, that might mean arriving in Tokyo and leaving from Osaka, instead of returning to Tokyo at the end.

The idea is simple. If your route runs one way, such as Tokyo toward Kansai, a return ticket forces you to travel back across the country on the last day. An open-jaw ticket removes that last leg, which is kind to tired legs and to elders.

When does open-jaw help?

It helps when your trip is a line, not a loop. The Tokyo to Osaka through Central Japan route is a good example, and so is a trip that ends in Hokkaido after a few days elsewhere. Our note on flying in and out of different Hokkaido airports covers that case.

It helps less on a short trip based in one city. There, a normal return is simpler and often easier to price.

What should you check first?

  • Fares for your exact dates, compared with a normal return.
  • Which airport pairs your airline really sells from KLIA or KLIA2.
  • The domestic train or flight cost between the two cities.
  • Baggage rules if you change airline mid-trip.
