Miyajima: tide, ferry and timing
You have seen the floating gate in photos, and want to arrive at the right hour.
You have seen the floating gate in photos and want to arrive at the right hour.
Miyajima is a small island in the Seto Inland Sea, off Hiroshima, and it is where the famous torii gate stands in the water. For most Malaysian travellers it works best as a half day or full day from Hiroshima, with the ferry crossing as part of the fun.
The question people ask is when to go and how long to stay. This page answers that, and shows the costs in yen and ringgit.
Miyajima means shrine island. The Itsukushima Shrine sits over the shallows, and the Otorii gate stands 16 metres tall in the bay 1. Beyond the shrine, you find free-roaming deer, a ropeway up Mt. Misen, the Daishoin temple and a five-story pagoda first built in 1407 2.
The shrine is the main reason to go. The rest is a pleasant, walkable island with shops and snacks along the waterfront.
Yes. At high tide the shrine and gate appear to float on the water, and at low tide you can walk out to the gate 3. Both are worth seeing, so pick the one that matters to your group.
Low tide lets your group stand close to the gate. High tide gives the floating look from the pier. Our guide to Miyajima tide and timing explains how to read a tide table for your date.
It suits first-timers who want one calm cultural stop between city days. It is gentle for families, because the main route is flat and short. It also suits couples who like a slow lunch and a walk.
If your group is mostly interested in shopping or nightlife, Miyajima is a short stop rather than a main event.
From Hiroshima Station the Sanyo Line to Miyajimaguchi takes about 30 minutes, then the ferry crosses in about 10 minutes 4. From Miyajima Pier the shrine is about a 10-minute walk, and ferries run from morning to night 1.
From Osaka, the Shinkansen (the bullet train between major cities) reaches Hiroshima first, then the same local train and ferry follow. The Hiroshima and Miyajima from Osaka guide compares a day trip with an overnight.
Plan three to four hours for the shrine, a walk and lunch. Add two hours if you take the ropeway up Mt. Misen. A full day lets you add Daishoin and a slow afternoon.
If you also want the Peace Memorial in Hiroshima, put it on a different day. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial plan shows how to pair them without rushing.
The JR ferry costs 180 yen for an adult one way and 90 yen for a child, plus a 100 yen visitor tax on entering the island 5. At the Bank Negara selling rate of RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026, the adult fare is about RM 4.70 and the tax about RM 2.60 5 6.
Japan Rail Pass and JR-West Rail Pass holders can ride the JR ferry 7. Shrine entry and ropeway prices change, so we confirm them when we quote your day. Use the ringgit budget tool for the full trip.
For most first trips, a day trip is enough and saves a hotel move. An overnight helps if you want the shrine in the quiet evening and early morning, or if your group needs a slow pace.
The comparison is in Hiroshima city or Miyajima overnight. Sleeping in Hiroshima keeps your luggage in one place and gives more restaurant choice.
Preparation is light. Most of it is shoes, weather and timing.
Most travellers return to Hiroshima by the same ferry and train. Leave a generous buffer if you have a Shinkansen to catch, because you cross by ferry and then ride the train.
If you stayed late, the last ferry time matters. Check it on the day and plan dinner with it in mind.
Three details matter. The sea breeze makes cool months feel colder, so layers help travellers used to tropical weather.
The stairs and slopes on Mt. Misen are optional, which suits elders.
Food needs checking too. Mirin and cooking sake appear in everyday Japanese dishes, so ask about ingredients 8.

Yes. From Hiroshima Station the train to Miyajimaguchi takes about 30 minutes and the ferry about 10 more. That leaves a comfortable half day or full day on the island. A day trip suits most first visits, and a night only helps if you want the quiet evening and early morning.
The JR ferry is 180 yen one way for an adult, plus a 100 yen visitor tax. At the Bank Negara selling rate of RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026, the fare is about RM 4.70 and the tax about RM 2.60. Rail pass holders ride the JR ferry but still pay the tax.
It does. At high tide the shrine and the gate look as if they float, and at low tide you can walk out to the gate. Neither is better, they are different photographs. Check a tide table for your date before you fix the time, and plan to see the shrine either way.
Yes for the shrine and the waterfront, which are flat and close to the pier. The ropeway and temple paths on Mt. Misen add stairs and slopes, so we plan them as optional. Walking from the pier to the shrine takes about 10 minutes, with seats and shops on the way.
Not for a first trip. Staying on the island gives you the shrine after the day crowds leave and an early morning before the first ferries fill. If your group is slow or you love quiet places, one night is a gentle option. Otherwise sleep in Hiroshima and keep luggage moves low.
