Hiroshima, planned with care
You want to see Hiroshima properly, and not rush it between two other cities.
You want to see the floating torii, and you are not sure where to sleep.
Stay in Hiroshima city if you want easy dining, lifts and a Peace Memorial visit without time pressure. Stay on Miyajima for one night if you want the torii and shrine in the quiet of evening and early morning. Many couples choose the island, while families with elders often prefer the city.
From Hiroshima Station the Sanyo Line to Miyajimaguchi takes about 30 minutes, and the ferry crosses in about 10 minutes 1. The shrine is about a 10-minute walk from Miyajima Pier 2.
The ferry costs 180 yen for an adult one way, plus a separate 100 yen visitor tax when entering the island 3. At the Bank Negara selling rate of RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026, that is about RM 7 per adult 3 4. A city stay keeps the day trip easy.
You see the shrine after the day visitors leave. JNTO says the Otorii gate stands 16 metres tall, and at high tide the shrine and gate appear to float, while at low tide visitors can walk up to the gate 2 5.
Check the tide table for your date, since it decides which view you get in the evening and the morning. Our tide and timing guide explains how to read it.
Ferries run from morning to night 2, but the last sailing time changes by season and service. Check the current last ferry on the operator’s site before you plan a late dinner on the mainland, and tell us if you plan to return the same evening.
If you sleep on the island, the risk disappears. Dining choices are fewer, so book dinner or arrange a packed meal.
The city suits groups that add the Peace Memorial. The museum is open 7:30am to 7:00pm from March to July and September to November, and 7:30am to 6:00pm from December to February, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. It advises early morning or evening because daytime is very crowded 6.
Plan the museum for early morning, then Miyajima after lunch. See Hiroshima Peace Memorial visit plan.
