Quiet Kansai: Uji and Fushimi
You love the idea of Kyoto, but not the idea of queuing shoulder to shoulder.
You love matcha and want a calm half day outside Kyoto without moving hotels.
Uji is an easy half day from Kyoto: a short JR ride, a walk to Byodoin and a matcha tasting. It fits between Kyoto and Nara on the same line, so you do not need an extra hotel night. It can be a calm break from busy Kyoto.
From Kyoto Station, take the JR Nara Line to Uji, by rapid or local train 1. The Keihan Uji Line from Chushojima is the other route. Both JR Uji Station and Keihan Uji Station are within walking distance of Byodoin 1.
The ride is short, so you can leave Kyoto after breakfast and be in Uji by mid-morning. Our page on Uji and Fushimi as a quiet Kansai alternative shows how to pair it with Fushimi.
Byodoin’s garden is open 8:45 to 17:30, with last entry at 17:15, and the Hoshokan museum from 9:00 to 17:00 2. The Phoenix Hall interior is open 9:30 to 16:10, every 20 minutes, with up to 35 people per visit 2.
Adult entry is 700 yen, and the interior adds 300 yen 3. At the Bank Negara selling rate of RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026, that is about RM 18 and RM 8 3 4. Junior high and high school students pay 400 yen and elementary students pay 300 yen 3.
The Byodoin tea room Sabo Toka is open 10:00 to 16:30, with last order at 16:00 5. It is closed Monday to Wednesday except public holidays 5, so plan around that.
Uji tea is part of the city’s identity, and the municipal tea room Taihoan has its own schedule 6. We check opening days for your date and book a tasting if one needs it.
Use this order to keep walking short.
The JR Nara Line connects Kyoto and Nara through Uji, so you can use Uji as the middle stop on a day that starts in Kyoto and ends in Nara. That avoids moving hotels. See Kyoto and Nara: same trip or split and Nara as a day trip.
If Kyoto day trips have started to feel like too much, read Kyoto day trips when you are exhausted.
Plan around the tea room’s closing days, and book a tasting early on a busy day. Ask about sweets and desserts, since ingredients vary, and mirin and cooking sake appear in everyday Japanese dishes 7.
Our Muslim-friendly dining notes give simple questions to ask. For the wider plan, see Kansai temple and food focus.
If you want Uji between Kyoto and Nara and are unsure about timing, send us your hotel area, dates and who is travelling. We build a half-day route around the Byodoin hours and your meal times.
You love the idea of Kyoto, but not the idea of queuing shoulder to shoulder.
You want one calm half day between temples, and a tea town may be just that.
You want to see the deer and the great Buddha without losing a whole day to trains.
You want temples in the morning and a good meal at midday without racing the closing bell.
You want to enjoy Japanese food and still be sure of what is in each dish.
Kyoto is full of temples and queues, and you want it calm rather than rushed.
Take the JR Nara Line from Kyoto Station, by rapid or local train, to Uji Station. The Keihan Uji Line from Chushojima is the other option. Both stations are within walking distance of Byodoin, so you do not need a bus or taxi.
Adult entry is 700 yen, about RM 18 at the Bank Negara selling rate of RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026. The Phoenix Hall interior adds 300 yen, about RM 8. The interior tour runs every 20 minutes with up to 35 people, so go early on busy days.
Yes. The JR Nara Line runs from Kyoto Station through Uji toward Nara, so you can use Uji as a stop on a Kyoto and Nara day without changing hotels. Leave Kyoto in the morning, spend the middle of the day in Uji and continue to Nara after lunch.
Yes, for a slow half day. Byodoin has a garden and a museum, and tea rooms offer seats and sweets. The walk from the station to Byodoin is short. Check Byodoin's hours first, because the tea room closes Monday to Wednesday outside public holidays.
Matcha itself is powdered green tea. Check the sweets and desserts served with it, because ingredients vary. Mirin and cooking sake appear in everyday Japanese dishes, so ask when you order food. We list simple options for tea stops.
