Bus planning for Nikko and Okunikko
You want shrines and the lake in one trip, and the buses look confusing.
You are picking between two train routes to Nikko and want the one that suits your hotel.
Take the Tobu limited express if your hotel is near Asakusa or Shinjuku, and the JR route if you start from Tokyo or Ueno and want to use the Shinkansen. JNTO names the direct limited express from Asakusa or Shinjuku as the best way to Nikko 1. Pick the start point that avoids the most changes.
The first is a direct limited express from Asakusa or Shinjuku 1. Tobu runs SPACIA, SPACIA X and Revaty limited express trains 2.
The second is the Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo or Ueno to Utsunomiya, about 50 minutes, then the JR Nikko Line 3. A local Utsunomiya Line train from Tokyo or Ueno takes about 100 minutes and may need a change 3.
Use the table to decide.
| Question | Tobu limited express | JR via Utsunomiya |
|---|---|---|
| Start station | Asakusa or Shinjuku. | Tokyo or Ueno. |
| Changes | Direct service. | Change at Utsunomiya. |
| Best for | Hotels near Asakusa or Shinjuku, groups with bags. | Travellers who already use JR passes or are near Tokyo Station. |
| Watch for | Autumn bus delays near the lake. | Transfer time at Utsunomiya. |
Start at the station nearest your hotel. A direct service avoids transfers, which helps elders and travellers with luggage. If you stay near Tokyo Station or Ueno, the JR route may be simpler.

A day trip works if you start early and keep to the shrine area. Our Toshogu day from Tokyo shows how.
An overnight suits slower groups, elders and anyone who wants the lake area. See Nikko overnight or day trip and Okunikko and Lake Chuzenji by bus.
Tobu warns that during the autumn foliage season, October to November, heavy traffic between Tobu-Nikko Station and the Lake Chuzenji area can cause major bus delays 2. There are no refunds for traffic-related problems 2.
Allow extra time, avoid tight connections and consider an overnight. See Kegon Falls and Chuzenji.
Bring a layer, because a mountain town can feel cooler than Tokyo. Check the timetable and seat reservation for your day. Compare with Hakone in Nikko versus Hakone for first-timers, and see Nikko and Tokyo day trips by effort level.
