Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji from Nikko
You have time for one more Nikko outing and wonder if the lake is worth the winding road.
You want the shrines and the lake, and you wonder if one day is enough.
A Nikko day trip works for the main shrine area in most seasons, but a night in Okunikko suits Lake Chuzenji, grandparents and peak autumn weeks. In October and November the road to the lake can jam badly, and staying overnight is the safer plan.
The Tobu Limited Express SPACIA takes about 1 hour 50 minutes from Asakusa to Nikko. The direct JR SPACIA takes about 2 hours from Shinjuku, and that JR route is not covered by the Nikko Pass 1.
That makes a day trip realistic, with roughly four hours on the train in total. Our Tobu or JR guide compares the two routes.
A day trip works if you mainly want the shrines and temples near the town and you travel outside peak weeks. You leave early, return before dark and keep your Tokyo hotel.
Our Toshogu day trip guide and the Nikko or Hakone comparison show what fits in one day.
Stay overnight when you want Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls without rushing, when grandparents are with you, or in autumn. The Nikko tourism guide warns that from mid-October to mid-November, the usual 45 minutes from Nikko Station to Lake Chuzenji may stretch to over 4 hours 2. It recommends staying overnight in Oku-Nikko.
See the Okunikko bus planning guide and the Kegon Falls and Chuzenji guide.
Okunikko has hot-spring inns. An onsen is a hot-spring bath, usually shared and without swimwear.
Yumoto Onsen water is emerald green at the source and turns milk white in the air 3. Chuzenji Onsen water is piped about 12 km from Yumoto at 78 degrees Celsius.
Ask each inn about private bath rooms if you have modesty needs or tattoos. Our private bath guide explains the options.
The NIKKO PASS ALL AREA costs 8,000 yen for adults and 4,000 yen for children 4. It is valid for 4 days and includes all Tobu Bus lines in Nikko, and the limited express ticket is bought separately. At RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026, the adult pass is about RM 208 4 5.
The pass’s Hybrid bus for the Odashirogahara area and the Lake Chuzenji cruise run from mid-April to November 30 6. Use the ringgit budget tool to test your total.
If you have only one day and dislike buses, Hakone or Kamakura may suit you better. Our Kanto grandparents guide and the Tokyo page help you compare.
Okunikko sits higher than the town, so mornings and evenings are colder, especially from autumn onward. Bring layers and gloves. Halal food is limited in the area, so we confirm meals with your inn in advance.

Yes. The Tobu Limited Express SPACIA takes about 1 hour 50 minutes from Asakusa, and the JR SPACIA takes about 2 hours from Shinjuku. A day trip covers the main shrine area well but gives little time at Lake Chuzenji. Overnight gives you the lake and mountain side.
Peak autumn runs from mid-October to mid-November, and the Nikko tourism guide warns the trip from Nikko Station to Lake Chuzenji may stretch from 45 minutes to over 4 hours. It recommends staying overnight in Oku-Nikko. We plan around that risk.
The NIKKO PASS ALL AREA costs 8,000 yen for adults and 4,000 yen for children, valid for 4 days. At RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026, that is about RM 208 for an adult. The limited express ticket is bought separately.
Yes, with a slow plan. Overnighting removes a long same-day return, and a hot-spring inn gives a rest. The shrine area has steps and uneven paths, so we keep the loop short and arrange buses or taxis between stops.
