Hida Folk Village in a Takayama stay
You have a family day in Takayama and wonder if the folk village is worth the trip out.
You will be up early in a mountain town, and nobody warned you about the cold.
Takayama’s morning markets are a short, easy visit if you sleep in town and go early. The Miyagawa market opens 7:00 to 12:00 from April to November, and 8:00 to 12:00 from December to March 1. Dress for a cold start, because the walk is outdoors.
Takayama has two morning markets. One sits on the bank of the Miyagawa River, and the other is in front of Takayama Jinya. Merchants sell local produce and artisanal craftworks there every morning 2.
The Miyagawa market runs along about 700 metres of the east bank, roughly a 10-minute walk from JR Takayama Station 1. Check the Jinya-mae market’s hours on the day, since they can differ from Miyagawa.
The Miyagawa market is open every day of the year, from 7:00 to 12:00 from April to November and from 8:00 to 12:00 from December to March 1. Some shops close early once they sell out, so go in the first half of the window.
Staying in town makes this easy. The tourism association recommends staying nearby because there is no large car park by the market 1. See Takayama old town or station stay.
Stalls sell wild vegetables in spring, summer vegetables in summer, and new rice and apples in autumn 3. In winter the selection is smaller, with preserved foods such as miso, pickles and mochi 3.
Artisanal crafts are also on offer 2. For halal travellers, preserved foods and pickles may contain mirin or other ingredients, so ask before you buy.
Nagoya, the usual gateway, has a mean temperature of 4.8 °C in January, 14.6 °C in April and 12.6 °C in November 4. Use those as a rough floor, since mountain towns can be colder.
A shoulder-season layer list:
In winter, tent stalls line one side of the street and a covered souvenir shop on the other offers shelter from snow and wind 3. Step into it to warm up.
Trains from Nagoya take about 2 hours 20 minutes, and from Toyama around 1 hour 30 minutes 5. Read Nagoya as a base for Takayama and Shirakawa-go and the Takayama and Shirakawa-go trip shape.
After the market, visit the Hida Folk Village. See the Takayama page for the wider picture, and Central Japan in winter for the snow months.
