Seasons and when to go

Spring or autumn for a first Japan trip

Both seasons look lovely in photos, and you must book before the flowers or leaves are known.

Spring and autumn both suit a first Japan trip, and the better one is the one that fits your leave and flexibility. Spring brings cherry blossoms and cooler mornings, and autumn brings foliage and clearer days. No one can promise blossom or leaf timing, so plan the trip to work either way.

How do the temperatures compare?

The Japan Meteorological Agency gives 1991 to 2020 averages. Tokyo averages 14.3 °C in April and 18.0 °C in October, and Osaka averages 15.2 °C and 19.5 °C 1.

Month Tokyo Osaka
March 9.4 °C. 9.9 °C.
April 14.3 °C. 15.2 °C.
May 18.8 °C. 20.1 °C.
October 18.0 °C. 19.5 °C.
November 12.5 °C. 13.8 °C.

Spring mornings feel cold to Malaysian bodies, and so do autumn evenings in November. Pack layers in both seasons.

Which season is wetter?

October is the wettest of these months in Tokyo, with 234.8 mm of rain against 133.7 mm in April and 96.3 mm in November 2. Autumn rain and typhoons can interrupt plans, so keep an indoor fallback for each day.

Read typhoon season travel planning if you travel in the autumn months.

What do spring and autumn offer?

Spring offers cherry blossoms, with Kyoto bringing late blossoms and fresh maple leaves in late April to May 3. Autumn is the foliage season 3. Timing moves by place and year, so read Japan seasonal timing ranges and sakura trip flexibility.

How do Malaysian school breaks line up?

For Group B states in 2027, the Term 1 holiday runs 6 to 14 March, the mid-year holiday 22 May to 6 June, the Term 2 holiday 28 August to 5 September and the year-end holiday 4 to 31 December 4.

The March break is early for most blossoms, and the year-end break falls after most foliage. Neither lines up neatly, so choose by leave, not by a perfect bloom. See Malaysian school holidays and Japan seasons.

How do you decide, in three questions?

  1. When can you actually travel? Start from your leave, not the flower.
  2. How much can you flex? If you can shift a week, chase the season. If you cannot, choose a region instead, as in choose a region instead of chasing a date.
  3. What matters more: blossoms or foliage? Both lift prices, so check off-peak and shoulder season value.

What if you want neither peak?

Shoulder weeks just before or after the headline season often give quieter streets and lower hotel prices. Plan Kyoto, Tokyo or a regional base that suits your dates, and send us the weeks you have.

If you are weighing spring against autumn, tell us your leave dates and who is travelling. We reply with a season, a region and a ringgit range that fits your flexibility.

Questions travellers ask

Is spring or autumn better for a first Japan trip?

Neither is better for everyone. Spring suits cherry blossoms and cooler mornings, and autumn suits foliage and clearer days. Tokyo is 14.3 °C in April and 18.0 °C in October on average, and October is wetter. Choose by your leave dates and how much you can flex.

Do Malaysian school holidays line up with sakura or autumn leaves?

Not neatly. In 2027 the March break runs 6 to 14 March for Group B states, which is early for most blossoms, and the year-end break from 4 December is past most foliage. Plan around your leave and accept that flowers and leaves cannot be promised.

Which season is cheaper?

Neither is reliably cheaper. Peak blossom weeks and foliage weeks both lift hotels and flights. Prices follow dates and demand, so compare your actual dates, and consider shoulder weeks just before or after the headline season.
