Prayer and meal requests to confirm

You want prayer time and meals to be settled before you pay, not found out on the day.

Confirm meals, ingredients and prayer space in writing before you pay. Then those details live in your day plan, not in your memory. This guide gives you the questions to ask and the answers to keep.

We report what a hotel or restaurant says, and you decide what meets your standard.

What can you rely on in Japan?

Japan has no central agency for halal accreditation, and a halal-friendly restaurant may not have a separate halal-only kitchen 1. That is why asking, and keeping the reply, matters more than a sign on the door.

Prayer rooms and mosques are mostly in larger cities. Major airports, tourist hotspots and Muslim-friendly hotels increasingly provide places to pray 2.

Which meal questions should you ask?

Ask each hotel or restaurant these questions.

  1. Which meals are included in my booking?
  2. Can you serve a dish with no pork?
  3. Do any dishes use cooking sake, mirin or other alcohol?
  4. What else is in the sauce, soup or miso?
  5. Can the same dish be cooked separately?

The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) notes cooking sake and mirin appear in everyday dishes, some miso contains alcohol unless labelled mu-ten-ka (additive-free), and gelatin or animal fats can show up in breads, snacks and sweets 3. Our food allergy and dietary cards guide explains how to show these needs in Japanese.

What prayer requests should you confirm?

Confirm three things. First, a quiet place at the hotel. Second, a prayer mat and the direction, if the hotel offers it 2. Third, a nearby prayer space for each sightseeing day.

Write the prayer times against the day plan, so the schedule fits around them. For rural days, plan a private place at the hotel.

What can a room with a kitchen do for you?

A rental apartment or suite with a kitchenette lets you prepare your own meals 4. This helps when restaurants cannot confirm ingredients. Concierge staff may also know nearby halal restaurants and mosques 4.

How do you confirm requests in writing?

Send each request by email or the hotel’s message form. Keep the reply. If the reply is vague, ask again with a shorter question. Our guide to confirming special requests in writing has wording you can copy.

We can send them for you and share the answers.

Questions travellers ask

What should I confirm about meals before booking a Japan trip?

Confirm which meals are included, what ingredients are used, and whether the restaurant can serve a pork-free and alcohol-free dish. JNTO notes cooking sake and mirin appear in everyday dishes, so ask in writing. We include your answers in the day plan so nothing depends on guesswork on the day.

Is there an official halal certificate in Japan?

JNTO says Japan has no central agency for halal accreditation, and a halal-friendly restaurant may not have a separate halal-only kitchen. So we report what each place says, and you decide what meets your own standard.

How do I plan prayer time during sightseeing days?

Ask us to mark prayer times against the day plan, and to note the nearest prayer space. JNTO says prayer rooms and mosques are mostly in larger cities, while airports and tourist spots increasingly offer places to pray. On rural days we plan a quiet place at the hotel.

Should I request a prayer mat from my hotel?

Yes, ask before you book. JNTO notes some hotels offer prayer mats and Mecca-facing spaces. Request it in writing and ask for the direction. If the hotel cannot help, bring a travel mat and a small compass.
