Arriving late in the evening: choosing a base

Your flight lands after dark, you are tired, and the last trains worry you.

If you land late, choose the base that asks the least of you that night. Near the airport is safest for a midnight landing. A hotel on a direct line is better for an evening landing. Confirm the last train and the hotel’s late check-in before you pay.

What matters most on a late arrival?

Three things: the last train or bus from your terminal, how long immigration and baggage take, and whether the hotel accepts late check-in.

Ask each of these in writing. Our late check-in in Japan hotels guide shows what to ask.

How far is each airport from the city?

Haneda is the closest. Haneda Airport to Shinagawa Station takes about 15 minutes by train, and to Hamamatsucho about 20 minutes 1. Keikyu trains from Haneda reach Yokohama in about 20 minutes 2.

The Narita Express and shuttle buses from Narita take about 90 minutes each way to Yokohama 2. Kansai Airport to Namba takes about 34 minutes at its fastest on the Rapi:t 3.

Our Narita or Haneda guide compares the two Tokyo airports.

What are your three options?

  1. Airport-area hotel. Best for midnight or later landings. You sleep, then move into the city after rest.
  2. Hotel on a direct line. Best for evening landings. One train from the airport, then a short walk.
  3. City hotel. Fine only if you land with time to spare and know the last trains.

For Tokyo, see late arrival hotel bases and Haneda hotel nights. For Osaka, read Kansai airport arrival base.

What about families and elders?

Families with young children and elders benefit most from the airport-area hotel. A tired child and a long luggage train ride is a hard first hour.

Ask for a room that is ready on arrival, with a lift. Then move to the city next morning.

What if you arrive in the early morning instead?

That is a different problem: check-in is hours away. Read early morning arrival before check-in for luggage storage and where to rest.

How do you decide?

  1. Find your landing time and your terminal.
  2. Check the last train or bus from that terminal.
  3. If the gap is short, pick the airport-area hotel.
  4. If the gap is long, pick a hotel on a direct line and tell it your flight number.

Questions travellers ask

What if I miss the last train from the airport?

Taxis and some night buses run, but they cost more and take effort when you are tired. Check your terminal's last train before you book, and pick a first-night hotel that works even if you are delayed. An airport-area hotel is the safe answer for very late landings.

Should I book an airport hotel for the first night?

For a midnight or later landing, yes, an airport-area hotel is often the easiest first night. You rest and move into the city after sleep. For an evening landing with time to spare, a hotel near a direct line saves a transfer next day.

Which airport is easier for a late arrival?

Haneda sits close to the city, with Shinagawa about 15 minutes by train. Narita is farther, with about 90 minutes to Yokohama according to JNTO. Kansai Airport to Namba is about 34 minutes at its fastest. We check your landing time against the last trains.

Can I request early check-in or a late arrival note?

Yes. Tell the hotel your flight number and landing time when you book, and ask them to note a late arrival. Some hotels keep the front desk open all night, and others need a call. Confirm in writing.
