Reaching Koyasan by Nankai, cable car and bus

You plan a temple night on Koyasan and want to know how the journey works with a suitcase.

Take the Nankai Koya Line from Namba to Gokurakubashi Station, change to the Koyasan Cable Car, then use a bus to the temples 1. The journey has four parts, and a temple night works best with one small bag.

This guide lists the legs, the ticket and the luggage plan.

What are the legs, in order?

The route has four legs.

  1. Namba to Gokurakubashi on the Nankai Koya Line. From Shin-Osaka, take the Midosuji Line to Namba first 1.
  2. Gokurakubashi to the top by the Koyasan Cable Car 1.
  3. A bus from the cable car station into the temple town.
  4. A walk to your temple lodging.

The limited express Koya stops at Namba, Shin-Imamiya, Tengachaya, Sakai Higashi, Kongo, Kawachinagano, Rinkanden-entoshi, Hashimoto and Gokurakubashi 2. Check current timetables for journey times, since they change with the season.

What is the Koyasan World Heritage Ticket?

It is a digital ticket from Nankai. It includes a round-trip discount train ticket between the issuing station and Koyasan Station, a 2-day bus pass on Nankai Rinkan Buses, and discount coupons for Kondo Hall, Konpon Daito Pagoda and Reihokan Museum 3. The bus pass excludes the Tateri, Koya Ryujin and Koya Niutsuhime lines 3.

It is valid for 2 days from the day you choose, and getting off at an intermediate station invalidates the rest 4. Only designated gates accept the QR code, and child-only tickets cannot be bought 4. Nankai publishes the price on its own page, so check it before you buy.

Is the ticket worth it?

It suits a one-night temple stay, because the 2-day validity covers arrival and return. It may not pay off for a very short visit. We add up your rides and bus trips first and tell you.

How do you handle luggage for a temple stay?

Travel light. Leave your suitcase at your Osaka hotel or send it ahead, and carry one small overnight bag. Hands-Free Travel delivery accepts items up to 160 cm in total size and 25 to 30 kg, and not valuables or fragile items 5. Coin lockers usually cost 300 to 600 yen 5.

Read our sending luggage between hotels guide. Our temple stay planning and shukubo preparation pages cover check-in and etiquette. See also the shukubo glossary.

When is another plan better?

If you are not sleeping on Koyasan, read Koyasan overnight or skip. If you prefer a city base, compare Koyasan or Kyoto as an overnight base. Winter brings cold, so we plan warm layers.

What should Malaysian travellers know?

Higher ground is cooler than the cities, so bring a layer even in warm months. Tell the temple about dietary needs when you book, since meals are set by each temple. We help you word the request.
