Shukubo, the temple lodging
You like the idea of a quiet night in a temple but wonder what it is really like.
Shukubo is lodging inside a Buddhist temple, where guests sleep in simple rooms and eat the temple’s vegetarian meals. It is best known at Koyasan, a mountain temple town, and it offers a quieter and slower night than a hotel.
What is a stay like?
You usually sleep on a futon laid on tatami, with shared or simple facilities. Dinner and breakfast are often served in your room. Many temples invite guests to watch the early morning prayers, which is part of the experience rather than a requirement.
Meals follow shojin ryori, the temple’s vegetarian cuisine. Bring layers, because old wooden buildings can be cold, which matters for tropical travellers.
How should a Malaysian traveller prepare?
Book early and say clearly who is coming, including elders, children and any dietary needs. Pack a small overnight bag and send the large suitcase ahead, since access to mountain temples often involves a bus and some walking. Quiet hours are normal, so plan early nights.
Read temple stay preparation, the Koyasan temple stay planning guide and whether to stay overnight at Koyasan or skip it.
