Naoshima art island: planning one day
You want the island with the famous museums, and do not want to arrive and find it closed.
You are curious about Shikoku's mountain bridges and want to know the journey before you commit.
The Iya vine bridge is a lovely place, but getting there takes planning. Without a car, you ride a JR train to Awa-Ikeda Station and then catch one of only seven buses a day 1. It is worth the transit for return visitors and rail fans who already know Honshu, and less so for a first week in Japan.
The Iya Kazurabashi is a suspension bridge made of vines, set in a deep mountain valley in Shikoku. Adult entry is 550 yen, and children under 12 pay 350 yen 2.
At the Bank Negara selling rate of RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026, an adult ticket is about RM 14 2 3. The Oku-Iya Double Vine Bridges are run from 1 April to 30 November 2026 after a winter closure 4.
Start at a base city. Awa-Ikeda Station is about 1 hour by JR from Takamatsu, about 1 hour 10 minutes from Tokushima and about 1 hour 30 minutes from Okayama 5. From Awa-Ikeda, Oboke Station is about 20 minutes on the JR line 5.
The bus is the weak link. Seven buses a day run from Awa-Ikeda to the bridge, four via Oboke and three via Deai 1. A missed bus can cost you the evening, so plan the return time first. Read our guide to last buses and service gaps in rural Japan.
The drive to the bridge from either the Ikawa-Ikeda or Otoyo exit takes about an hour, and parking at Kazurabashi Yume Butai costs 500 yen for a standard car 6. Rental cars can be hired on the day, but advance reservation is recommended 7.
If you drive, read renting a car in Japan as a Malaysian and driving on the left. A driver is calmer for groups with elders.
The bridge is open all year from sunrise to sunset, from 7:00 to 17:30 in October and November, and 8:00 to 17:00 from December to mid-February 8. Mountain roads feel colder than the coast, so bring layers.
It suits return visitors and rail fans who have done the main Honshu cities and want a quieter, rural day. It also suits travellers combining Shikoku with Naoshima or Okayama.
If this is your first week in Japan, spend those hours on easier days in Kyoto or Hiroshima. See Shikoku for return visitors for a wider route, and Okayama as a base for Shikoku and Naoshima.
Check the timetable, pack layers, and keep your luggage light. Flights into Shikoku can shorten the journey; see flying into Shikoku.
Move slowly on the bridge, and decide beforehand whether elders or children will cross it. For the wider island, see Shikoku.
If Shikoku is on your list as a return-visit idea, send us your starting city, dates and whether anyone will drive. We tell you honestly what the transit looks like and whether it fits.
You want the island with the famous museums, and do not want to arrive and find it closed.
Shikoku feels far from the usual routes, and you wonder how to reach it from Malaysia.
You have done the main Japan circuit and want somewhere slower, but you worry about getting around.
Shikoku feels quieter and less known, and you want to be sure the journey is worth it.
You want Naoshima art or a taste of Shikoku, and a base that does not tire you.
You already drive on the left at home, and wonder what will still feel strange.
Take a JR train to Awa-Ikeda Station, then a bus. The tourism office lists seven buses a day to the bridge, four via Oboke and three via Deai. With so few buses, plan your outward and return times first, and confirm the timetable for your date.
Adult entry is 550 yen, about RM 14 at the Bank Negara selling rate of RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026. Children under 12 pay 350 yen. Parking is 500 yen for a standard car if you drive. The cost is small, the transit time is the real price.
It is worth it if the bridges and mountain scenery are the reason for your trip. Awa-Ikeda is about 1 hour 30 minutes by JR from Okayama and about 1 hour from Takamatsu, then a bus or drive follows. For a first Japan trip, easier day trips on Honshu give more per hour.
A car or driver gives you flexibility, because the drive from the Ikawa-Ikeda or Otoyo exit is about an hour. If you rent, read our notes on driving on the left. A driver or private car avoids the bus gaps and suits groups with elders.
The bridge is open all year, with shorter hours in winter: 8:00 to 17:00 from December to mid-February. Spring and summer give the longest opening hours. Some other bridges close for winter, so check each one for your dates.
