Flying into Shikoku: Matsuyama or Takamatsu
Shikoku feels far from the usual routes, and you wonder how to reach it from Malaysia.
You want the island with the famous museums, and do not want to arrive and find it closed.
Naoshima works best as one unhurried day from Okayama or Takamatsu, with one or two museums and a ferry that fits both ends. The ferry from Uno takes about 20 minutes 1, and from Takamatsu about 60 minutes 2. The two things that spoil a day are a Monday closure and a missing booking.
This guide covers ferry times, tickets and how much art one day holds.
From Okayama, take a train to Uno and then the ferry, which takes about 20 minutes and costs 370 yen for an adult. There are sixteen departures from Uno between 06:10 and 00:35 1.
From Takamatsu, the ferry takes about 60 minutes and costs 680 yen for an adult, or 1,590 yen by high-speed boat. Eight departures run from 07:20 to 20:30 2. Ferries and high-speed boats can use different piers, so check which pier your sailing uses.
Our island access guide covers island ferry access in more detail.
Okayama is quicker, with a 20 minute crossing. Takamatsu gives you a longer ferry but a base that suits Shikoku travel. Our Okayama base guide compares both, and the Okayama and Kurashiki stopover adds a day.
Chichu Art Museum is the one to book first. It opens 10:00 to 17:00 with last entry at 16:00, and is closed on Mondays 3. Advance reservation with a date and time is required, and if online tickets sell out there are no on-site sales that day 3.
Weekday admission is 2,500 yen online and 2,800 yen on-site, and weekends and holidays are 2,700 yen online and 3,000 yen on-site. Children 15 and under enter free 4. At RM 2.603 per 100 yen, a weekday online ticket is about RM 65 5.
One island, two museums, and time to walk between them. A full day is enough for Chichu plus one more venue and the open-air art near the port. A second island does not fit comfortably.
Plan the day backwards from the last ferry. Allow time for lunch, because venues close early in the evening.
Avoid Mondays, when Chichu is closed 3. Check the calendar for any other venue you want, because closing days differ by venue. We confirm each one for your date.
Weather and walking. A day on an island involves ferries and slopes, so wear comfortable shoes and carry a light rain layer. For elders, ask us about transport on the island before booking.
Do not rely on being able to buy tickets at the door. For art, the plan is simple: one island, one booked slot, an early start.
If you want Naoshima on a specific date, send us the date, where you sleep and who is travelling. We check ferries and museum calendars, and tell you which tickets to book.
Shikoku feels far from the usual routes, and you wonder how to reach it from Malaysia.
You have done the main Japan circuit and want somewhere slower, but you worry about getting around.
You want to see the islands, but a missed last ferry would turn a lovely day stressful.
You are passing through Okayama and wonder if the canal town is worth a half day.
Shikoku feels quieter and less known, and you want to be sure the journey is worth it.
You want Naoshima art or a taste of Shikoku, and a base that does not tire you.
Yes. From Uno the ferry takes about 20 minutes, and from Takamatsu about 60 minutes. A day on Naoshima fits one or two museums plus open-air art. Start early, because the last Chichu entry is at 16:00 and the ferries back need to fit your return.
Chichu Art Museum is closed on Mondays, with a note on national holidays. Because closing days apply to other venues too, avoid Monday if you can. We check each venue's calendar for your date before we fix the day.
Yes. Chichu requires advance reservation with a date and time, and when online tickets sell out there are no on-site sales that day. Book once your date is fixed. Weekday online admission is 2,500 yen, which is about RM 65 at RM 2.603 per 100 yen.
Not comfortably in one day. Each island needs its own ferry and its own time. One island with unhurried museum visits is more rewarding than rushing two. If you have more days, we add a second island on a separate day.
