A private-car Hokkaido itinerary
Hokkaido is large, and you want the days to be about the views, not the timetables.
You have seen Sapporo and Furano before, and the wild east is calling.
Choose eastern Hokkaido if you have been to the central area and want wild landscapes, wildlife and quiet roads. Choose the central route if this is your first Hokkaido trip, because Sapporo, Otaru and Furano sit close together. The east pays you back in scenery but costs you in driving hours.
The east’s best-known stops are Kushiro’s seafood market, Lake Akan with its Ainu culture and the Shiretoko Peninsula, where brown bears, foxes and deer roam freely 1. These are quieter and more remote than the central area.
The centre has Sapporo, known for beer, ramen and the Snow Festival, and Furano’s lavender farms in summer 2. See our guide to the Asahikawa, Furano and Biei region for how that side works.
Very honest. Distances between eastern sights are large, and a day can be mostly road. We do not quote a single drive time here because it depends on season, route and stops, so we confirm it with operators when we plan your dates.
Plan for fewer stops per day and a rest day built in. With elders or small children, long seat time wears everyone down faster than a long walk does.
Rail is thin in the east, so most travellers choose a car, a private driver or a tour. Our rail, rental car or tour guide compares them, and the private car itinerary shows how a driver changes the days.
Winter closes some roads and attractions, so check seasonal operations for Hokkaido before you fix dates.
Most Malaysians reach Hokkaido through Tokyo or another Japanese hub, with Tokyo to New Chitose taking about 90 minutes by air 3. Our direct or via guide explains the options.
The east also means a long return to the airport on your last day. Keep that day free.

If you have seen central Hokkaido and want the east, send your dates and ages and we will tell you how many days you really need.
Hokkaido is large, and you want the days to be about the views, not the timetables.
You have chosen your Hokkaido dates and want to be sure the things you came for are running.
Hokkaido is huge, and you are not sure how your family should move around it.
You want Hokkaido, and you are not sure whether the route has a stop or two.
You picture cool air and open land, and want it to be easy for everyone.
Three famous names sit close on the map, and you want to know the order that makes sense.
Usually not. The east has fewer trains, longer distances between sights and fewer hotels, so a first-timer spends more time in transit. Central Hokkaido has Sapporo, Otaru and Furano close together. Return visitors who want wild scenery enjoy the east more.
Allow at least five to six days on the ground, because the drives between Kushiro, Akan and Shiretoko are long. Rather than quote one figure, we check the current road and ferry conditions with operators when we plan your dates.
A rental car is the usual choice, but a private driver is gentler for families and elders. Tours cover Shiretoko's main sights, with fewer stops. We help match the choice to who is travelling and how long they can sit in a car.
Figures are checked against these sources and dated so you can see how current they are.
Tell us your dates, who is travelling and what you hope to see. We will reply with ideas and a tailored quote.
