Matsumoto and Nagano castle and temple route
You want a quieter route between mountains, a castle and a temple, without long travel days.
You want a slow trip for two, with mountain air and one night in a hot-spring inn.
A good central Japan trip for two is four days and three nights. It runs from Tokyo to Matsumoto, with one night in a hot-spring inn and a flexible day for Kamikochi or the castle. The pace is slow, the train rides are short, and the evening at the inn is the highlight.
Take the Limited Express Azusa from Shinjuku to Matsumoto, which Nagano tourism lists at 150 minutes 1. Our Tokyo to Matsumoto route guide compares the train and bus.
| Day | Plan | Load |

Matsumoto Castle is open 8:30 to 17:00 with last admission at 16:30 2. It costs 1,300 yen for adults on a paper ticket, and it is about 15 minutes on foot from the station. At RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026, that is about RM 34 2 3.
Matsumoto also has no fewer than 16 hot spring resorts within its city limits 4. See the castle route guide.
A ryokan is a traditional Japanese inn, often with dinner and breakfast. An onsen is a hot-spring bath, usually shared and without swimwear.
One hot-spring inn recommends arriving by its 3:00 pm check-in so guests can bathe before dinner, which is served around 6:30 pm and takes about two hours 5. Plan nothing else for that evening, and ask your inn for its own times. Our ryokan dinner time entry and the meal plan guide explain more.
If shared baths feel awkward, ask for a room with its own bath. Read the private bath guide and the first-timer etiquette guide.
Tokyo averages 5.4 °C in January 6, and the mountains are colder. Kamikochi is at about 1,500 metres, where temperatures are 5 to 10 degrees lower than at lower elevations, so a light jacket is advised even in summer 7.
Pack thermal innerwear, gloves and a hat. See the cold prep guide and the winter guide.
If you want Kamikochi in more depth, read the Kamikochi day trip guide. For a wider loop with Nagano, read the Nagano page. The Matsumoto page gives the full destination view.
Halal food is limited, and ryokan dinners are set menus, so tell the inn about dietary needs when you book. Send the request early and ask for a written reply. Shared baths are gender-separate and swimwear is not worn, so a private bath suits modest travellers.
If you want a quiet trip for two with a hot-spring night, send us your dates and the season you prefer. We choose the inn, the timing and a light route, and we ask the inn about dinner and baths in writing.

You want a castle and mountain air without another crowded big city.
You like the idea of snowy villages and want to know what winter there really asks of you.
You want the hot-spring experience, and you want it with privacy.
Four days and three nights is comfortable. Spend a night in Matsumoto, a night in a hot-spring inn and a flexible day for Kamikochi or the castle. The Azusa from Shinjuku takes 150 minutes, so travel days stay short. Add a night if you want a second inn.
Arrive by check-in, around 3:00 pm at one well-known inn, so you can bathe before dinner. That inn serves dinner around 6:30 pm and it takes about two hours. Ask your own inn for its times, because they differ, and tell it about dietary needs.
It is worth it when privacy matters to you. Matsumoto has no fewer than 16 hot spring resorts within its city limits, and some inns offer rooms with their own bath. Our private bath guide explains the options and what to confirm in writing.
Kamikochi sits at about 1,500 metres, where temperatures are 5 to 10 degrees lower than at lower elevations, so carry a light jacket even in summer. In winter, bring thermal layers, gloves and a hat, and expect colder mornings than Tokyo.
