An Akihabara day for anime fans

You have a wish list of figures and games, and a suitcase that is already almost full.

Plan one unhurried day for Akihabara, start at the stores with your must-have items, and keep the heavy and fragile purchases for the end. Before you go, set a yen budget and a bag budget, because both run out faster than most fans expect.

What is Akihabara, and why do anime fans go?

Akihabara began as a postwar black market for electrical goods, which gave it the nickname Electric Town. It is now the centre of Japan’s otaku culture, with anime, manga, games and maid cafes 1. Retro game fans can browse Super Potato, a three-floor store, and the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) advises planning a long visit, often a full day 2.

It sits in Tokyo, and our Tokyo anime culture plan shows how to combine it with other districts.

How do you reach Akihabara?

Akihabara Station is served by the JR Yamanote, Sobu and Keihin-Tohoku lines, the Tsukuba Express and the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line 3. That makes it simple from most Tokyo hotels.

How should you plan the day?

A good fan day has a rhythm of shopping, resting and eating. Use this order.

  1. Arrive when stores open, with your list sorted by priority.
  2. Visit the stores with the items you cannot miss first.
  3. Break for lunch away from the main street.
  4. Visit a game store or a cafe in the afternoon.
  5. Leave fragile and heavy purchases until the last stop.

How do tax-free rules work for purchases from November 2026?

For purchases on or after 1 November 2026, you pay the tax-inclusive price at the shop. The consumption tax is refunded after customs confirms the goods are leaving Japan within 90 days, and the minimum is 5,000 yen before tax per store per day 4.

One rule matters for collectors. If any goods on the same purchase record are not with you at customs, none of the goods on that record can be confirmed 5. So keep everything from one receipt in your hand luggage or in the bag you will show. Our tax-free shopping process guide and the tax-free shopping glossary cover the steps.

How do you budget yen against luggage?

Set two limits before you shop: a spend limit and a bag limit. Convert the spend into ringgit so you feel it. At the Bank Negara Malaysia selling rate of RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026, 10,000 yen is about RM 260 6.

Then check the checked-baggage and cabin allowance printed on your ticket, because it depends on your fare. Pack the outbound suitcase half empty, and weigh it at the hotel before you go to the airport.

How can you move purchases without carrying everything?

Forwarding helps. Narita, Haneda and Kansai airports offer luggage delivery, and most major hotels can arrange delivery between hotels. Items must stay within 160 linear cm and 25 to 30 kg 7. Read how to forward luggage to the airport before your flight for timing.

Keep fragile boxed items with you if you can. Ask the store how to handle a tax-free purchase that you want to ship, so the refund is not lost.

What should you know when you reach Malaysia?

Malaysian Customs allows other goods of total value not exceeding RM1,000 duty-free for air arrivals 8. Travellers carrying dutiable goods must use the Red Lane, and failing to declare is an offence 8. Check the current limits on the Customs site before you fly, since rules can change.

If you have a long wish list and limited suitcase space, send us your flights and how many stops you plan. We help you spread the shopping across days, so the bags stay manageable.

Questions travellers ask

How long should I spend in Akihabara?

JNTO suggests planning a long visit, often a full day. For most anime fans, one unhurried day is enough for the big stores, a game shop and a cafe. If you also want Nakano Broadway or Ikebukuro, give those their own half days.

How does tax-free shopping work from November 2026?

For purchases on or after 1 November 2026 you pay the tax-inclusive price and apply for a refund when leaving Japan. Spend at least 5,000 yen before tax at one store in a day, keep the goods with you for the customs check and leave within 90 days.

Can I send my figures home separately?

You can forward bags to your hotel or the airport with services such as Yamato and JAL ABC, within 160 linear cm and 25 to 30 kg. Goods bought tax-free must still be shown to customs, so ask the store how to handle a purchase you plan to ship.

Do I have to declare what I buy in Akihabara in Malaysia?

Malaysian Customs allows other goods up to RM1,000 duty-free for air arrivals, according to its Traveler's Guide. If you carry dutiable goods you must use the Red Lane, and not declaring is an offence. Check the current limits before you fly.
