Exchange order, the rail pass voucher

You bought a rail pass before leaving home and now you wonder what you hold.

An exchange order is a voucher you buy before the trip and swap for a rail pass after you land in Japan. It is not the pass itself. Think of it as a receipt that a JR counter converts into the real ticket.

How does the swap work?

At a JR ticket office, you show the voucher and your passport. Staff issue the pass and set its start date, and the validity clock begins from that date. Offices at major airports and big stations handle this, so plan the swap for a time when you are not rushing for a train.

What should a Malaysian traveller check first?

The Japan Rail Pass is offered jointly by six JR Group companies, and reserved seats can be booked in advance only when the pass is bought on the official website 1. That means the route you buy through decides whether you get a voucher or a direct pass.

Arrival time matters. If you land late, the counter may be closed, so find the opening hours of the office nearest your airport. Keep the voucher with your passport, not in checked luggage.

What next?

First work out whether a pass pays off, with is a rail pass worth it for your route and the nationwide JR Pass after the price rise. The JR Pass glossary entry and regional rail pass entry explain the pass types, and Smart EX versus the ticket counter covers the alternative.
