Capsule hotel, the sleeping pod stay
You are curious about a pod bed, and wonder if it suits you.
A capsule hotel is a hotel where each guest sleeps in a small private pod. JNTO describes pods as private sleeping units, with shared facilities such as toilets and showers 1. It is a short, low-cost stay for a night or two.
What can you expect?
You check in, store your bags in a locker and sleep in a pod. Bathing is usually shared, and many places separate guests by gender on different floors. Pods differ from simple stacked units to roomier cabins 1.
Pods are quiet at night, but not soundproof. Bring earplugs. Our capsule hotel for first-timers guide explains the routine.
How does it matter to a Malaysian traveller?
It suits solo travellers on a tight budget, or a late arrival before an early flight. It suits couples and families less, because pods are single and gender-separated floors split a group.
Luggage is the main issue. Large suitcases rarely fit in a pod, so read hotel room size before you decide. Shared bathing also follows its own etiquette, explained in our bathing etiquette entry. For group stays, compare a business hotel.
