Reaching Kanazawa from Tokyo or Kyoto

You want Kanazawa on your route and wonder whether to come from Tokyo or from Kyoto.

Tokyo to Kanazawa is one direct ride on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, and a one-way arc from Tokyo to Kansai is usually kinder than backtracking. The fastest ride between Tokyo and Kanazawa takes 2 hours 28 minutes 1. The Kansai side needs a transfer at Tsuruga, so check bags and timing there.

How long is Tokyo to Kanazawa?

The Hokuriku Shinkansen runs between Kanazawa and Tokyo in 2 hours 28 minutes, and between Toyama and Tokyo in 2 hours 8 minutes 1. It is one direct ride, which suits families who dislike changing trains with bags.

Tokyo is therefore the simplest side to come from. Our Kanazawa add-on or skip guide helps you decide whether to include it.

What is the Tokyo-in, Osaka-out arc?

Fly into Tokyo, travel to Kanazawa by Shinkansen, then continue south to Kyoto and Osaka and fly home from Kansai. You never repeat a leg, and each move carries your bags only once.

Compare this with the Tokaido route: the fastest Nozomi between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka takes 2 hours 21 minutes 2. The arc adds Kanazawa and needs at least one extra night. See Japan open-jaw Tokyo to Osaka.

What is the Tsuruga transfer?

On the Kansai side, the route from Kyoto or Osaka to Kanazawa runs by limited express to Tsuruga, then by Shinkansen onward to Kanazawa. It adds one change with bags. Check the connection time and platform in the current timetable, because services change.

If you want to avoid the change, a flight into Komatsu Airport is another way in, as covered in Komatsu Airport for Kanazawa and Hokuriku.

What about backtracking?

Backtracking means going Tokyo to Kanazawa and back to Tokyo, or Kyoto to Kanazawa and back. It suits trips that start and end in one city, and it keeps one hotel as a home base.

It adds travel time in each direction, and it repeats a leg. Choose it only if the hotel base matters more than the extra time.

How does it relate to a rail pass?

A rail pass does not cover Nozomi, and pass holders add a special ticket of 4,960 yen for Tokyo to Kyoto or Shin-Osaka 3. At RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026, that is about RM 129 3 4.

Read Hokuriku Arch Pass for Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka and the rail pass breakeven tool before buying anything.

How do you decide, in three questions?

  1. Where do you land and fly home? Different airports favour the arc.
  2. How many bag moves will your group accept? Fewer favours the arc with luggage forwarding.
  3. Do you want Kanazawa for one night or two? See Kanazawa and Kyoto in four days. Kyoto is about 1.5 hours from Kansai Airport if your route ends there 5.

If Kanazawa is a stop between Tokyo and Kansai, tell us where you land and where you fly home. We reply with a direction, a train plan and a luggage plan for each move.
