Getting to Shirakawa-go by bus
You have seen the thatched village and need a clear plan for the bus ride in.
You have seen the glowing snow village photos and wonder if the light-up is worth the effort.
The Shirakawa-go winter light-up is lovely but demanding. It runs on only a few nights, access and accommodation are limited, and winter weather can disrupt buses. Another season is easier to plan, while the light-up rewards those who prepare early and keep a fallback.
The official site lists four dates for the 2027 event: 11 January, which is a public holiday, then 17, 24 and 31 January 1. These are the only chances, so your trip must fit one of them.
Dates can be updated, so check the official site before you book. See also festival and event verification.
Tourist Association accommodation for the event is allocated by lottery rather than first come, first served 2. Regular car parking reservations for the first round were listed as sold out 3.
That tells you demand is high. Plan well ahead, and confirm transport and any entry arrangements for your night before you commit.
Most visitors reach Shirakawa-go by bus, as explained in Shirakawa-go by bus from Takayama, Kanazawa or Nagoya. Heavy snow can slow or disrupt buses, and winter days are short.
Keep a spare day and avoid tight onward connections the next morning. Pack for real cold; see seasonal luggage and winter coats.
Choose the light-up if you love winter scenes, accept some uncertainty and can plan early. Choose another season if you want an easier trip, a looser schedule or have elders and small children.
Spring and summer are greener and calmer. Autumn adds colour. For help with winter in the region, read Central Japan in December to February. To decide between a day trip and a night, see overnight or day trip.
If the light-up is your goal, send us the date window you can manage. We will check what is open to book, build a bus-and-weather fallback and keep another season in reserve.

It is risky. Accommodation is allocated by lottery and parking reservations for the first round sold out. Access rules and reservations can apply, so confirm the current arrangements and your transport before you commit to a date.
Yes. Outside the light-up, you can visit the village without a lottery or fixed event date. Spring greens, summer rice fields and autumn colour are calmer to plan. The light-up is special but needs more preparation and flexibility.
