Sendai: day trip or base
You have seen Tokyo and Kyoto, and Sendai looks close enough to try in a day.
You are heading north for the first time, and you want one calm city to start from.
Sendai works well as a first base in Tohoku because the Shinkansen from Tokyo takes only one and a half hours and the city has the hotels, food and transport you need. Plan the clothing carefully, because the cold is a different level from home.
Either the Tohoku or Akita Shinkansen from Tokyo reaches Sendai Station in one and a half hours, according to the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO). Highway buses take five to seven hours 1. That makes Sendai the easiest large city in the region to reach.
It suits rail fans and return visitors who want a calmer alternative to the Tokyo and Kyoto circuit. See our Sendai page and the wider Tohoku page.
The city has enough for a day or two. Grilled beef tongue is the signature dish, and grilled-meat restaurants cluster around the station 2. The Loople sightseeing bus offers hop-on, hop-off access to major sites from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with multilingual announcements 2.
Seasonal events add a reason to time your visit. The Tanabata Festival is in July, and the Pageant of Starlight illumination runs in the second half of December 3.
Use it as a base when you want two or more nights in the north, with day trips and a hotel you do not change. Use it as a day trip when your main base is Tokyo and you have a day to spare. Our Sendai day trip or base guide compares both.
For a longer route that continues to Aomori, read Tohoku, Sendai and Aomori route and Tokyo to Sendai and Aomori by Shinkansen.
Sendai averages 2.0 °C in January and 24.4 °C in August, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency 4. Tohoku offers endless powder snow in winter 5. A tropical body feels January very strongly.
Pack in layers:
Our cold-weather packing guide for tropical travellers has the full list. Plan one indoor stop for every outdoor stop in winter.
It depends on your route. A JR East regional pass can suit a trip with many Shinkansen legs, but not every itinerary. Read whether the JR East Tohoku area pass is worth it before you buy anything, and we will total your real journeys.
Muslim-friendly restaurants and prayer spaces cluster in major cities, and mirin or cooking sake appears in everyday dishes, so ask about ingredients 6. Sendai is a larger city and gives you more options than smaller towns around it.
