Osaka, a food-first base for your family
You want a first Japan trip that is easy on the legs and generous on the plate.
You want Kyoto, Nara and Kobe without packing your suitcase every second day.
Yes, Osaka works as your only Kansai base. Kyoto, Nara and Kobe are each about one hour by train from Osaka’s central transport hubs 1, so you keep one hotel and make a day trip each day.
You unpack once and avoid hotel changes. Each outing starts and ends at the same bed, which is kind to children and elders.
JNTO calls Osaka a charming, relaxed city best known for food, fun and nightlife 2. That helps, since your evenings are free for dinner after each outing. Read Osaka or Kyoto as your base for the other side.
Plan each outing as about one hour out and one hour back 1.
| Day | Outing | Ride each way |
|---|---|---|
| 1. | Osaka city and food. | Local only. |
| 2. | Kyoto. | About one hour. |
| 3. | Nara. | About one hour. |
| 4. | Kobe. | About one hour. |
| 5. | Spare or slow day. | Local only. |
Start from the nearest hub station to your hotel, since the hour counts from there. Add the walk to the platform.
Put the longest or most tiring outing early, when your group is freshest. For most groups that is Kyoto, which has many sights to walk. Keep Nara, a shorter day, for the second half of the trip.
For a short stay, read Nara day trip from Osaka or Kyoto and Himeji Castle half day from Osaka.
The Nankai Rapi:t limited express takes about 34 minutes at its fastest between Kansai Airport and Namba 3. A Namba hotel makes the first night easy after a long flight. See Kansai Airport to Osaka Namba and Umeda.
It saves hotel changes, and it saves luggage moves. If you do change hotels, most major hotels can arrange luggage delivery, and station coin lockers cost 300 to 600 yen 4.
It does not save time at the stations. Count about two hours of travel for each outing, and keep each day to one main place.
Pick a hotel near a hub with lifts. Book early for school holiday weeks.

Yes. You unpack once, and each outing returns to the same bed. Each trip is about an hour each way, so keep one outing a day and rest in the afternoon. Station stairs still matter, so we pick a hotel with a lift near the hub.
