Staying in Dotonbori: fun, noise, late nights
You want the neon and the food at your door, and you also need to sleep.
Osaka has two busy centres and you are not sure which hotel area suits your trip.
Choose Namba if you want food, nightlife and the quickest link from Kansai Airport. Choose Umeda if your days run through Kyoto, Kobe or Shinkansen connections. Both are central, and the right one depends on how you arrive and where you spend your days.
Namba is the southern hub. It is closest to Dotonbori’s food streets and neon, and it is the end of the Nankai airport line. Umeda, in the north, is a major rail hub with department stores and links to Kyoto, Kobe and beyond.
Osaka is known for food, fun and nightlife, and Kyoto, Nara and Kobe are each about one hour away by train 1. Either area works as a base for these trips.
Namba is the easier arrival. The Nankai Rapi:t limited express takes about 34 minutes at its fastest from the airport to Namba 2. That short ride suits a tired traveller after a long flight.
Umeda needs a different route and a transfer, so it takes longer. Our guide to Kansai Airport to Namba and Umeda compares the routes.
Shin-Osaka is the Shinkansen station, a short ride from Umeda, so Umeda is more convenient if you will take the bullet train. Namba is a little farther from it. For Kyoto and Kobe, Umeda has direct lines that suit day trips.
If your plan is rail-heavy, read the Shin-Osaka stay guide for rail travellers.
