Spring regions compared
You want spring flowers in Japan and wonder which region gives you the best chance.
You missed the cherry blossoms, or want something after them, and wonder what is still in flower.
After the cherry blossoms, late spring in Japan still has flowers to see, and one of the best known is shibazakura near Mount Fuji. The 2026 festival ran from 11 April to 24 May 1. Bloom dates move each year, so plan around a region, not a day.
Near Mount Fuji, shibazakura is a low pink carpet flower. The Fuji Shibazakura Festival at Fuji Motosuko Resort had about 500,000 plants of six varieties in 2026, and the dates may change depending on bloom conditions 1. Cherry blossoms also linger in cooler places: Arakurayama Sengen Park reaches full bloom in mid-April 2.
Other late spring flowers bloom in other regions. We confirm which are in season for your dates, and do not promise a particular bloom.
Choose a region, not a date. A region with several options protects you from a bad bloom week. Our choose a region instead of a date guide explains the method, and cherry blossom trip flexibility without promises shows how.
Base at Kawaguchiko for two nights and add a flexible day. Our Tokyo and Kawaguchiko itinerary and the Chureito Pagoda and Kawaguchiko guide show the shape. Mount Fuji views depend on weather, so do not rely on one clear day.
Late April and early May overlap with Japanese Golden Week, a busy travel period. The Golden Week guide explains how it overlaps with Malaysian holidays. Book early for those weeks. See the spring region comparison to choose a region.
Keep a flexible day and a second option in the plan. Check bloom reports close to departure. If the flowers have passed, a nearby garden or lakeside walk still makes a good day. See the Fuji Five Lakes page for more.
If you are travelling in late April or May, send us your dates and interests. We pick a flower region and build in flexibility, since bloom dates move each year.
