Exchange rates when budgeting Japan in ringgit

You are watching the yen move and wondering whether to wait or exchange now.

You cannot know the best day to exchange, and no guide should pretend to. Set a rate you can live with, add a buffer and exchange in steps.

How much does the yen rate move?

Not by much from day to day, but enough over months to matter. Bank Negara Malaysia’s selling rate for 100 yen was RM 2.5025 on 15 April 2026 and RM 2.6066 on 9 October 2026 1.

That is a difference of about 4 per cent 1. On a trip budget of ¥300,000, it is roughly RM 300 either way 1.

How do you set a rate buffer?

Pick a stated rate, then add a cushion to the yen portion of your budget. A buffer of about 5 per cent is a sensible planning choice 1.

For example, ¥300,000 at RM 2.603 per 100 yen is about RM 7,809 2. Adding 5 per cent gives about RM 8,200 2. The buffer is your own choice, not a forecast, and you can make it larger or smaller.

Use the ringgit budget tool to run your own numbers, and read how to build a ringgit budget with a stated exchange rate.

Why is the rate you get lower than the one online?

Providers buy and sell at different rates. On 19 October 2026 Bank Negara listed RM 2.558 for buying and RM 2.603 for selling per 100 yen 2.

That gap is about 1.8 per cent 2. Money changers and card issuers may add their own margins, so compare the final ringgit amount, not just the headline rate.

When should you exchange?

No one can name the best day, and we do not forecast rates. These steps lower the risk.

  1. Exchange part of the amount once your flights are confirmed.
  2. Exchange more closer to departure.
  3. Keep some spending on a card or IC card, and compare options in cash, card or IC card in Japan.

How do you keep the budget honest?

Record the rate and the date for every figure. Our guides on fare facts versus planning estimates and recording the source and date for every fare show how.

Questions travellers ask

Should we exchange all our yen at once?

You do not have to. Some travellers exchange part of the amount early and the rest later, which spreads the risk. Compare each provider's rate against the Bank Negara Malaysia reference, and check fees. We help you set the plan, not predict the rate.

How big a buffer should we add to the budget?

A buffer of about 5 per cent on the yen portion is a sensible planning cushion, since the Bank Negara rate moved by about 4 per cent between April and October 2026. It is a budgeting choice, not a forecast, and you can adjust it to your comfort.

Why is the rate I get lower than the one I see online?

Providers buy and sell at different rates. On 19 October 2026 Bank Negara listed RM 2.558 for buying and RM 2.603 for selling per 100 yen, a gap of about 1.8 per cent. Money changers and cards add their own margins, so compare the real total.

Can you tell us the best day to exchange?

No one can, and we do not forecast rates. What helps is a rate you can live with, a buffer in your budget and a plan to exchange in two or three steps. We build the ringgit budget around the rate you choose.
