Hakone or Fuji Five Lakes from Tokyo
You have a few spare days near Tokyo and two famous mountain areas to choose between.
You want to see Hakone from Tokyo in a day, and you worry about what might be closed.
Yes, you can do the Hakone loop in a single day from Tokyo, but it is a full one. Start early, accept that you will not see everything, and keep a fallback ready in case a leg closes.
The loop is a chain of different vehicles. From Shinjuku you ride the Odakyu Line to Hakone-Yumoto, then change to the Hakone Tozan Train to Gora, the cable car to Sounzan and the ropeway across the volcanic valley. A boat on Lake Ashi and a bus complete the circle.
The Hakone Freepass from Shinjuku covers the Odakyu Line in the area, the Tozan train, the cable car, the ropeway and the sightseeing cruise. It costs 7,100 yen for 2 days and 7,500 yen for 3 days, adult price 1. Our Hakone Freepass versus individual tickets guide shows when it pays off.
A reserved Romancecar seat costs an extra 1,200 yen each way for adults 3. Our guide to Romancecar versus JR from Tokyo compares the two ways to get there.
The ropeway has fixed hours. It runs between 08:45 and 17:15 from March to July and September to November, and between 09:15 and 16:15 from December to February 4. Winter days leave less time, so plan fewer stops.
Cut in this order if time runs short: the museum stop, the extra viewpoint, then the walk at Owakudani. Keep the ropeway and the boat, since they define the loop. Do not cut the buffer for your return train.
The Owakudani area is frequently closed because of volcanic activity and noxious gases 5. Ropeway service stops when activity rises to an unsafe level 2. The 2-day pass also ends after the last service on the second day, not after 48 hours 3.
Use this fallback order:
Our Hakone page and Fuji views without guarantees guide explain why a clear Fuji view cannot be promised.
It needs thought. The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) advises people with heart or lung conditions, pregnant women, infants and the elderly to avoid visiting the volcanic area 5. The volcanic zone is also about a 10-minute walk from the ropeway station 6.
You can enjoy the views from the ropeway and skip the walk. We note this in the plan and keep a calmer alternative ready.
A day trip suits groups who like a brisk pace. An overnight stay suits families with young children, elders or anyone who wants an onsen in the evening. It also gives you a second chance if the weather turns.
If you are weighing the extra hotel night, read Hakone Yumoto, Gora or Sengokuhara and one hotel or two in the Kanto region.
At the Bank Negara Malaysia selling rate of RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026, a 7,100 yen adult pass is about RM 185 7 1. A round-trip Romancecar supplement of 2,400 yen, twice the one-way figure, is about RM 62 3 7.
Child fares and food are extra, and the rate changes daily. We total your group’s real figures when we make your plan.

You have a few spare days near Tokyo and two famous mountain areas to choose between.
You want the volcano, the lake and the hot spring without a day of missed connections.
A pass, a loop of trains, cable cars and boats: you wonder if it adds up.
You have come a long way for Fuji, and the sky decides whether it shows.
You are taking parents to the mountains and want the fewest changes and stairs.
Hakone is spread along a mountain loop, and you want to sleep in the right spot.
Yes, as a full day, if you start early and accept that you will not stop everywhere. The sequence is train, cable car, ropeway and lake boat, with the ropeway running to a fixed closing time. Many families find an overnight in Hakone more relaxed.
The 2-day adult pass from Shinjuku is 7,100 yen according to Odakyu. At RM 2.603 per 100 yen, that is about RM 185. A reserved Romancecar seat adds 1,200 yen each way. Child fares are lower, so we price your group's exact ages.
Service stops when volcanic activity rises to an unsafe level, according to JNTO, and the Owakudani area is frequently closed. We plan a fallback, such as swapping to the lake and a museum or onsen. Check the operator's live status on the morning you go.
JNTO advises people with heart or lung conditions, pregnant women, infants and the elderly to avoid visiting the volcanic area. You can still ride and enjoy the views, then skip the walk. We note that choice in each plan before the day.
Figures are checked against these sources and dated so you can see how current they are.
