Hakodate Morning Market: early or late
You have heard the seafood is best early, but your flight lands when the market is winding down.
The famous night view is outdoors in the cold, and you want to get it right.
For visitors, the ropeway is the simpler way to see the Hakodate night view. The ride takes about three minutes 1 and runs in winter, when the mountain road is closed to vehicles 2. Buses and taxis are the alternative in the warmer months.
Adults pay 1,800 yen round trip or 1,200 yen one way, and children pay 900 yen round trip or 600 yen one way 1. At the Bank Negara selling rate of RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026, that is about RM 47 and RM 31 for adults, and about RM 23 and RM 16 for children 1 3.
A family of two adults and two children pays 5,400 yen round trip, about RM 141 1 3.
From 20 April to 30 September the last departure to the summit is 21:30. From 1 October to 19 April it is 20:30 4. Operating hours may change with weather or other conditions, and the best night view comes about 30 minutes after sunset 4.
The ropeway is closed for equipment inspections from 20 October to 8 November 5. Avoid that window for Hakodate.
The summit road is open to buses and taxis, not private vehicles, from 17:00 to 22:00 from late April to late September and from 16:00 to 21:00 from early October to mid-November 2. Shuttle and sightseeing buses operate from JR Hakodate Station and other major attractions 6. In the snow season the road is closed to vehicles, so use the ropeway 2.
The summit is exposed, and sunset is the busiest time of day 6. Go up a little before sunset, find a place with a wind break, and come down after the lights are on. Do not stay for an hour outside.
For a tropical traveller, a simple kit helps:
Read our winter walking safety guide for icy pavements. Phone batteries lose power in the cold, so keep your phone in an inner pocket.
Hakodate is usually added to a longer Hokkaido route rather than visited alone. See the Hakodate add-on plan and Otaru or Hakodate as an extension. A morning at the Hakodate morning market pairs well with a night on the mountain.
Learn about the ropeway, then see the Hakodate page and the Hokkaido guide.
