Seasons and when to go

A first snow trip with kids and elders

You have never touched snow, and you want your family's first time to feel safe and happy.

For a first snow, keep it short and warm. Plan an outdoor block of an hour or so, a warm break, and an early finish. The biggest surprise for tropical bodies is the cold, not the snow itself.

What is the cold shock?

Sapporo’s January mean is -3.2 °C 1. Wind and wet snow make it feel colder. Your body is used to heat, so hands, feet and ears chill first.

Dress in layers with a thermal base, a warm middle layer and a windproof outer coat, then add gloves, a hat and snow boots. Read cold-weather packing for tropical travellers and how cold Japan is in winter for Malaysians.

How often should you rest?

Plan a warm break about every hour. Head indoors for a hot drink, change wet gloves and check children’s hands. Rest earlier if anyone shivers.

Go back to the hotel before the light fades and the temperature falls.

Which snow activity suits each age?

Age group Realistic activity
Young children. Snow play and a sled in short spells.
School-age children. A lesson or a gentle slope with an instructor.
Teenagers. Skiing or snowboarding, with a lesson.
Elders. Snow views, an onsen day or a winter festival.

Check ages and rules with each operator. Hokkaido’s winter brings powder snow to Niseko, Rusutsu and Furano, and the Sapporo Snow Festival features large snow and ice sculptures 2.

Where should you go for a first snow?

Sapporo gives snow with city comforts. Niseko United is the area’s largest ski area, made up of four resorts. Driving from Sapporo or New Chitose Airport takes about three hours, and buses and trains also run 3.

Add Niseko only if skiing is the goal and allow the transfer. Read Niseko and Hokkaido in winter versus summer.

How do you manage luggage in winter?

Winter coats take space. Station coin lockers cost between 300 and 600 yen depending on size, and most major hotels can arrange luggage delivery between hotels 4. Keep a small day bag with spare gloves and a thermos.

What should Malaysian families remember?

Keep expectations small and kind: snow is wet and cold, and children may want to go in soon. Muslim-friendly food is easier in Sapporo than in a ski village, so plan meals. Tell us your ages and dates and we plan a first snow day that ends happy. Our Hokkaido kids and elders pace guide shows the rest.

If your family is planning a first snow trip, send us the ages and your dates. We choose a base, a snow day that fits and warm places to rest.

Questions travellers ask

How cold is Hokkaido in January for a first-time snow trip?

Sapporo's January mean is -3.2 °C, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency, and wind makes it feel colder. That is a big shock for tropical bodies. Plan short outdoor blocks, warm layers, gloves and a warm place to return to every hour or so.

What snow activity is realistic for young children?

Is a snow trip suitable for elderly parents?

It can be, with a gentler plan. Elders can enjoy snow views, a warm onsen day or the Sapporo Snow Festival, which features large snow and ice sculptures, without walking on slippery slopes. Choose a hotel near the main sights and use taxis on icy days.

Do we need to go to Niseko for first snow?

No. Niseko is a major ski area, and driving from Sapporo or New Chitose takes about three hours. For a first snow, Sapporo gives snow with city comforts. Add Niseko only if skiing or powder is the goal, and allow the transfer.
