A rail pass for Central Japan, or not

You see passes for Takayama, Kanazawa and the Alps and want to know if any beat single tickets.

A pass wins only if the single fares for the legs it covers add up to more than its price. On a fixed route, that is a short sum you can do yourself. This page lists four Central Japan passes with prices in yen and ringgit, then shows the method.

What do the Central Japan passes cost?

Use the table. Ringgit uses the Bank Negara selling rate of RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026 1.

Pass Adult About RM Days
Takayama-Hokuriku 19,800 yen. RM 515 1. 5 consecutive.
Alpine-Takayama-Matsumoto 24,500 yen. RM 638 1. 5 consecutive.
Ise-Kumano-Wakayama 16,500 yen. RM 430 1. 5 consecutive.
Mt. Fuji-Shizuoka (mini) 6,500 yen. RM 169 1. 3 consecutive.

Children pay half price on these passes, for example 9,900 yen on the Takayama-Hokuriku pass 2 3 4. Each pass gives unlimited rides on applicable JR trains and other listed transport, so check each line’s official page for service status 5.

What does each pass cover?

The Takayama-Hokuriku pass covers Shirakawa-go and Gokayama via Kanazawa, Toyama and Gifu 2. The Alpine-Takayama-Matsumoto pass covers the Alpine Route, Gifu and Nagano, starting from Nagoya 3.

For a deeper look, read Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass and regional JR passes versus the nationwide pass.

How do you test a pass on a fixed route?

Follow these steps.

  1. List every leg you will ride inside the pass days.
  2. Look up the single fare for each leg on the operator’s page.
  3. Add the fares.
  4. Compare the total with the pass price.
  5. Add the cost of any leg the pass does not cover.

If the total is higher than the pass price, the pass wins. Use the rail pass break-even tool to check.

When is no pass the better choice?

If you stay in Nagoya and make one or two day trips, single tickets often cost less than a five-day pass. A pass makes sense when you ride several long legs inside its five consecutive days.

Express bus times to Shirakawa-go are about 50 minutes from Takayama and about 1 hour 20 minutes from Kanazawa 6. Read central Japan bus versus train days for how to plan them.

What should you check before buying?

Check that the days you will use are consecutive, that each leg is covered and that service is running. For the term, see regional rail pass. For the route, see Nagoya as a base or stopover and Nagoya.

Questions travellers ask

Which Central Japan pass is cheapest?

The Mt. Fuji-Shizuoka mini pass at 6,500 yen for 3 days, then the Ise-Kumano-Wakayama pass at 16,500 yen, the Takayama-Hokuriku pass at 19,800 yen and the Alpine-Takayama-Matsumoto pass at 24,500 yen. The smallest number is not automatically the right pick, because each pass covers a different route.

How much is the Takayama-Hokuriku pass in ringgit?

It is 19,800 yen for adults, about RM 515 at the Bank Negara selling rate of RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026, and 9,900 yen for children, about RM 258. It is valid for 5 consecutive days, so the days must be consecutive.

How do I know if a pass beats single tickets?

List the legs you will ride, look up each single fare, and add them. If the total is higher than the pass price, the pass wins. If it is lower, buy single tickets. Include bus legs only if the pass covers them. We do this sum for your route.

Does the pass cover the Shirakawa-go bus?

The Takayama-Hokuriku pass is built around Shirakawa-go, but check the pass page for the bus lines it includes before you rely on it. Express bus times to Shirakawa-go are about 50 minutes from Takayama and about 1 hour 20 minutes from Kanazawa.

Do I need a pass if I stay in Nagoya?

Not if you make only one or two day trips. Single tickets for a day trip often cost less than a five-day pass. A pass makes sense when you ride several long legs inside its five days.
